Woke up at 8:30 this morning and read yesterday's LJ and DW entries. Then I had a chat with Frankie, Sarah, and Kali. That lasted until 1 when I went to golf. We had a different instructor today, and he paid some attention to me, although he still paid more attention to Lisa, even when it was just me and Lisa left (everyone better than us went to play a couple holes of golf, and the classroom dunces stayed behind on the driving range to practice). It was hot out. One of the hottest days of the year. Too hot to be September. It's only 4 days to fall. I demand hoodie weather. But instead it was 87F out. Bill and Kevin, the BlazeSports people, made sure everyone drank lots of water. I moved on to using the driver today, but still only hit the ball 25 yards or so. Although, it's hard to tell how far it went because there are no markers on this range. I have to say I prefer the range near my father's house, because it has markers to show how far you hit the ball. I'm assuming 25 yards because it was the same distance I managed with the sand wedge and that was measured at 25 yards at the range near my father's. Kevin said if I want the ball to go farther, I have to move faster, but when I try moving faster, I miss the ball altogether. At any rate, I'm beginning to doubt I'll ever be ready to go out and play golf. I am particularly downcast at being one of the two dunces left at the end of today's practice.

After practice, I went to meet Adie for bat mitzvah tutoring. She had printed out my Torah portion, and I read it through several times. Then we talked about different ways of learning the singing part - I can either try to learn it from her singing it, or through learning the cantillation marks. I think I'll probably try to learn from her singing because I remember songs I haven't heard in decades. I don't remember things I learned to read, like Cyrillic. We're not meeting next week because it's between the High Holy Days, so I have two weeks to learn to read my portion. Next week golf is going to be in Stone Mountain with some famous football player who is going to help teach us, and then take us out to dinner.

Came home and the trash people still hadn't come. I filled another bag of trash, and brought it up to the curb. Fed the dogs, and now I'm not sure what I'm going to do with myself.

Sorry I didn't write yesterday. I slept literally until 5:45, woke up, went on a walk with Donna, came home, ate dinner, and was back in bed by 8:30 and just woke up. Although I did wake up for a little bit around midnight, I fell back asleep within an hour. So apparently I needed sleep.

Oh, gosh. Once again I've let months go by without posting anything here. My own personal life has been reasonably quiet, marred mainly by the rather horrible death of my dog Missy. I won't go into the details but she did not go gently into that good night. I'm glad I was home when it happened, but I also never want to go through that again with a pet.

Two of my best friends, who happen to be roommates, were both diagnosed with cancer one month apart from each other. Both had surgery, and both are now recovering and getting on with their lives. One will have to undergo quarterly followup exams for the next five years. Life. What can you say? Some times it sucks, but it beats the alternative.

For the last few months, I have been utterly obsessed with 'Twin Peaks: the Return,' on Showtime. I had a love/hate relationship with the original series, which I watched with equally fervent obsession each week back in 1990-91. My friends and I were the kind of original series fans you hear about now: holding weekly viewing parties replete with coffee, donuts, and pie, dressing up like the characters (I wrapped myself in plastic wrap one week and made up my face with Laura Palmer's dead white skin and bluish lips, and naturally was also the Log Lady one week, too), and then spending the week chatting about all the weird clues while we waited for the next episode to air. I LOVED the first season of the show. My love for the show crashed and burned halfway through season two. After the network forced the producers to solve the Laura Palmer murder, the show went to complete and utter hell IMO, and only returned to its previous bizarre glory when David Lynch stepped back in for the last couple of episodes. Then I was like, Glory Days! The show is back! But no, the show was cancelled and it ended on the worst of all possible cliffhangers. I was so furious that I couldn't think clearly about the show at all, no kidding. Normally, I don't mind cliffhangers because most tv writing is so predictable that I almost know what's going to happen next. Not so with a David Lynch cliffhanger. Ugh. 25+ years later, David Lynch picked up the story where it left off and delivered an 18 hour S3 sequel that was so gloriously good that just thinking about it makes me want to skip around the room. I give it a 99/100 (taking off 1 point for the Audrey Horne scenes with annoyed the living bejesus out of me). Don't know if there will ever be a Season 4 but that's okay because the godawful cliffhanger ending of Season 2 was finally resolved.

Right now, all out of the blue I find myself quite enthusiastic about Harry Potter fandom again and it's all because I finally saw the movie, 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them'. I missed the theatrical release because it hit theaters at a point when my life was just too upside down for me to go out and see movies. I really loved the original Harry Potter books (and to a lesser degree the films), but always, always was more interested in the adult characters than the kids - which is awkward when dealing with a story series about kids. This movie series (I understand there will be five) not only features adult characters, it is set in one of my favorite historical eras, the 1920s-1940s. So, a parallel magical world, cool creatures, the ramp up to WWII, and a much more interesting villain (Grindelwald is vastly more complex and interesting to me than Voldemort ever was, IMO), and it all adds up to great fun. I'm looking forward to the sequel next year.

Speaking of grown-up versions of kids' stories, I enthusiastically recommend Ysabeau Wilce's short story collection, "Prophecies Libels & Dreams: Stories of Califa." The writing is electric, lush, and sparklingly witty. Califa is a sort of steampunk, magical AU version of California where Western magic and native American and Aztec-inspired magic coexist with history and technology that is similar to the real world. I'd heard great things about Wilce's YA series set in the same world (the Flora Segunda series), but for the longest time, the Harry Potter series (of all things) burned me out on reading YA stories for years. "Prophecies Libels & Dreams" was such a delight to read that I plan to get the Flora series now and read them too.

I found some vodka and peach schnapps last night and asked Kevin to mix it for me because he usually makes it perfect for getting drunk and not getting too drunk or sick. It's usually 1/4th vodka and 3/4ths peach schnapps. Last night he mixed it the opposite and didn't warn me. I got very sick. But I woke up hangover free. I woke up a couple of times, once dying of thirst, so I got some water and went back to bed. Then I got up and got online but didn't stay up, then finally around 2 I got up for good.

I finally broke the wire for my computer, which had been threatening to break for months. I drove to the forum to replace it. It was expensive as shit to replace, but I mean if it's either replace this wire once a year or replace the whole computer once a year like I was doing when I had a PC (if I ever had one that lasted a year!) it's a no-brainer.

After that, we went to meet my parents at Lon U for my father's birthday. We had Thai food, which is really tasty but I think I'm allergic to (I think they add fish sauce to everything). We ate and Kevin told my parents about his new job.

Then I went to Temple for Selihot. First we went around the circle and introduced ourselves. Then we went around the circle and talked about a lesson we learned from our parents. I told the story I shared here recently about my friend in high school whose step-mother was arrested. There were a lot more people than expected there this year (about 30 compared to last year there were 2). I wound up talking to Lori and Rabbi Lebow for a while. We were talking about Star Trek and Lori told me that they're putting the show not on cable but on a pay network. So I guess I'm not going to watch it. I pay enough for cable and netflix. I don't need to be paying for anything else, especially just for one show.

I put on some music to get Avinu Malkeinu out of my head. I'm not sure it worked. I'll probably be humming that all night. :(

I woke up with a big dose of "don't wanna" today. Yves called and woke me up. I talked to him while he drove somewhere for work, and then got out of bed for about 15 minutes before I had to go.

I went to the aquarium today. First I was at otter, but the otters were off exhibit so I was just sitting there saying "nobody's home" - occasionally one of the otters would come on exhibit for a moment or two, including Cruz, giving himself a BJ and this lady was sitting next to me like "oh he's eating something, aw he's so cute" I was like "yup. That is exactly what is going on... lol"

I went from there to Aqua Lab with the sea stars. Literally no one came through. I might have seen 10 people the entire hour, and the half of it where the dolphin show was going on, I saw nobody. I even pulled out my own phone and started reading FB for a while. Nobody came through. It was kind of weird.

My final stop was OV Touch pool, which is no longer a touch pool, and instead just means sitting by the mermaid's purses and talking about those. It's not one of my favorite places to be anymore. After that they set me to rover, which I hate, so I just came home.

That's about it for the day. I thought about stopping at Tower and buying some alcohol, but I had already stopped at chick fil a, and I didn't want my food to get cold(er) while I went to get booze. I regret that now. :-/

Today was one of those days. I didn't get out of bed until 4, although I woke up at 3 and from then was kind of cuddling my cats and kind of being depressed. Then I went to the write in from 5-7, but left early at 7 because my brain wasn't cooperating. I wound up falling back asleep until 8:30 and then getting up, but I still don't want to be up. At the write in I got to an ending point for my NaNo novel plotting, though I still need to put in some kind of subplot or something. I then wrote two more shorts for the 100_situations prompts. For a total of like 600 words, and then my brain just broke. I tried walking around the restaurant to see if that would jump start my brain, but it really didn't, and I went home shortly thereafter. I got home and read lj and dw. I'm still having a big old dose of "don't wanna" do anything. I'm clearly not earning any days off for next week, for only the second time this year. I did earn one from walking at the SCA event, so I'll still have one. But still. I think I need to treat the PSWC as bonus points as I really clearly am not willing to wake up early to do it. I don't have any really good reason to, though.

I just finished getting my ass reamed for over an hour because I dared give family money to charity. Apparently Kevin doesn't believe in charity. He claims family money can't go out unless we both agree to it, and we have to discuss what to do with it, but not giving to charity is 100% his decision, and I get no say in it.

Progress This Week

Play Recorder for Dancers - More working my way through the introductory book. I also bought a book of Disney songs that might be too hard for me and also is set for a duet, which... I don't have a partner, so I'm not sure that was the smartest thing I ever bought.

Go to 30 meetings - I went to last night's meeting, which was project night, and had a good chat with the people there.

Teach 5 classes - I taught Celtic Knotwork at Crossroads.

NaNoWriMo 2017 I continue plotting my novel.

Post 100 situations prompts to AO3 - one more up

Fill a second 100 situations with a different fandom - Star Trek begun. I'll start posting them probably in December, after I take a break from them for NaNo.

30 entries to “Monthly Diary Day” - Another one is up.

Read 3 books on Kyivan Rus - working my way through a book on the Khazars.

Take golf lessons - Although this was cancelled on account of hurricane this week, I am working on this.

Listen to 90 other podcasts - Listened to an episode of Stuff You Should Know about cutting people's heads off.

Read the entire Bible - Working my way through 2 Kings.

What is the worst injury you’ve ever had?

uh. Once when I was at Corvus, I sat down on their couch, and suddenly felt the worst pain of my life in my knee, which I could no longer put weight on or straighten. Orion gave me a vicodin, and I slept there that night. The next day, my friends carried me out of the basement and to the clinic on campus, where they sent me for an X-Ray. They didn't see anything wrong, but they couldn't straighten my leg either, so they gave me a brace to hold it straight. I was sitting in my room on my bed when Soren came to bring me dinner. He bumped into my knee, and I screamed, and then suddenly it felt just fine. I had apparently dislocated it, and just needed it to be knocked back into place. But I hopped around on crutches for a full week before Soren did that, and was in a lot of pain the whole time.

I decided not to set an alarm to go off today. I just honestly didn't want to deal with it. I wound up waking up at 1:30. I got an email telling me I have tickets to the Temptations and 4 Tops concert, so I tried to call my dad, but he was without power, and his house phone doesn't work without power, and he hadn't been able to plug his cell phone in, so he didn't answer. I emailed him, but needless to say he didn't get email. He wound up getting power back a couple hours later and calling me, and we decided we'd go to the concert together.

Otherwise, I didn't do much. I read LJ, DW, twitter, and facebook. I found and plugged in my ipad and my kindle. My kindle doesn't seem to be charging, but I'm not sure maybe it doesn't charge things when the laptop is closed? The ipad was on 12% charge when I left for the SCA meeting.

I went to Decatur for the SCA meeting. Getting there was rough. All the traffic lights inside the perimeter were still down, and people were not polite or intelligent enough to treat them like 4-way stops. Really judging you, Decatur. Decatur is, of course, the rich part of Atlanta, so I suspect it's not so much a matter of intelligence, but of thinking they are more important than everyone else. Fuck rich people.

Anyway, I got to the meeting, and there were 6 of us there. It was project night but only two people had brought projects. We all just sat and talked until 8:30 when we went across the street to dinner at Imperial. The burger was good, but they had the saltiest fries I've ever tasted. We also had a poutine for the table, which was good, but had no cheese curds, just melted American cheese. Somehow, not the same thing. I'm a minute and a half from finishing Mathews Men. So I think I'm going to go do that, despite not being in the car.

What are you reading Wednesday?

What are you reading?

One Way or Another by Annette Laing - I feel like Brandon is the only intelligent character.

The Jews of Khazaria by Kevin Alan Brook - No progress this week.

The Mathews Men: Seven Brothers and the War Against Hitler's U-boats by William Gerouxby - We're getting towards the end of the war. We've left Hitler behind and are now talking about kamikaze pilots. I assume this book will be over soon?

2 Kings - All the kings of Israel worship foreign gods, but there are prophets of God who occasionally perform miracles. Like, these people are so stupid that God is still performing miracles in front of them and they don't believe in him. It's no wonder God gave up on us and stopped sending prophets, and performing miracles.

Watched the last and final episode of Blood Drive. In spite of SyFy's recent cancellation, I think BD's makers knew well beforehand there might be only one season due to the way things wrapped up. Not really surprised, show was way too weird for the average viewer. For the non-average, it is a sometimes annoying, frustrating mess. Grace and Arthur weren't the best leads. Supporting and side characters were so much more interesting (and why I kept watching) than those two overrated boring asses. The car needing blood to run got forgotten midway thru the series. Tantalizing Scar plot bits got dangled, but never followed thru.

Going to miss Karma, Aki, and Slink - most of all Slink. He should have gone out on a high sarcastic note, not the sad muttering about his hat.

Really, really, really miss Slink. There's no action figure to lavish my love on ;_;

Last week, over a very hot Labor Day weekend. Moved all 344 Fangoria issues up into an even hotter attic (yes, heat does rise) which took a few sweaty hours. I've been a long time reader since pretty much it's start back in 1979. So yeah, lot of work sorting into numeral order, getting big plastic bins up thru a narrow opening, bagging for carrying, up and down the damn ladder, trying to keep cats from "helping" (climbing up and playing in surrounding pink installation), numerous break to cool off some and re-hydrate, cursing during those breaks at the sight of still many bags to move. Thank the gods the job's done!

Last few years, I noticed problems with Fangoria. Wasn't keeping up with new movies/TV, too much going down memory lane articles, book reviews got cut short or didn't appear at all in some issues, covers didn't always look right - magazine seemed lost, trying to find its way. Got to the point I just wasn't really reading anything except the book reviews; everything else quick flip thru. I made the tough decision not to renew my subscription for 2016, hence why the attic move.

Turned out, that was the smart thing to do. #344 was the last printed issue ;_; Fangoria swore up and down the magazine's not dead - Yeah, right guys. October 2015 was the last date you did anything worth noting. Refund subscribers, focus on being a strong online presence.

But, noooo. Let Dread Central and Bloody Disgusting be the far better Top Horror sites. There's also a lot of other horror-related site competition to consider which you're clearly not.

Want to wear the crown again? Quit resting on your laurels and get busy, Fangoria!

Finished this week

Go to the DragonCon Parade - I did this, and it was fun.

Progress this week

Play recorder for dancers - I continue to work my way through the beginner's book of recorder. They've just introduced the concept of flats and sharps, which is where I got too confused to continue the last time I tried learning to read music. So we'll see.

NaNoWriMo 2017 - I've begun plotting a new novel which I will attempt to write in November.

Post 100 situations prompts to AO3 - Another story prompt is posted on ff.net.

Shoot 10 rolls of film and develop them - I shot another two halves of rolls of film at dragoncon.

50 hours at zoo 2017-2018 - I've been working on some quizzes and other information you have to learn before you can volunteer.

Read 3 books on Kyivan Rus - I'm reading one now on the Khazars but I've decided it counts.
